3 Part Design Course

Please book below.

Designing a garden or border can be a real challenge. Visualising how a space will look, planning its structure and thinking about practicalities like soil and aspect can feel daunting. This three-part course is designed to break the process down into manageable steps and to help give you the confidence to create a beautiful outdoor space.

By the end of the course, you’ll have the tools to approach garden design with clarity and purpose, whether you’re starting from scratch or enhancing an existing space.

Week 1: Laying the Foundations

We’ll start with the basics: understanding key design principles and tackling tricky areas. You’ll learn a little about hard landscaping, such as paths, seating areas, and boundaries, and how to add focal points to create a sense of flow. and the impact of structure including using topiary and pollarding techniques.

Week 2: Creating Cohesion

This session focuses on bringing harmony to your garden. We’ll explore different garden styles, how to use shrubs and trees for structure, and ways to extend interest into autumn and winter with hedges, evergreens, and seasonal colour. We’ll also cover practical skills like choosing the right plants for your soil and aspect.

Week 3: Planning for Colour and Interest

In the final week, we’ll look at creating planting plans that ensure colour and texture through the seasons. You’ll learn how to combine bulbs, perennials, biennials, grasses, and self-seeders to keep borders looking vibrant and full of life, even in late summer.

The sessions often have a practical element, so outdoor wear is recommended as we may be in the garden for some of the time. Our location is rural; up a long and rather bumpy farm track (apologies).
