Course dates and overview of contents:
Workshops run from 10am - 12.30 (approx) and include tea coffee and cake.
April 17th The foundations of a beautiful garden. We start with soil and aspect, our gardens and their micro-climates, then focus on plants for places. What’s looking good in the spring garden. We’ll also sow some seeds
May 15th The focus in May is on blossom, biennials, and bulbs as the garden bursts into bloom
We’ll look at some design principles, learn about the ‘Chelsea Chop’ and more pruning techniques. We'll also take some cuttings.
June 12th June is the Cottage garden month, when the gardens are brimming with flowers. We’ll focus on roses and cottage garden flowers. We'll also look beyond the cottage, consider colour schemes and planting plans, deal with weeds and make organic pest control.
July 10th What’s looking good in the summer garden. How to keep colour in the borders all summer long. Design tips for successional interest and tricks and tips for keeping the show on the road.
September 11th This is the first of the autumn sessions, but the garden should still be in full swing.
We’ll focus on grasses and late summer perennials, light effects and self-seeders.
Then we’ll take some semi-ripe cuttings and learn how to collect and store seed.
October 9th The colours in the garden are mellower now as the light sinks lower in the sky.
There’s still much to enjoy – colour from late blooms is joined by foliage tints, fruit and berries. Preparing for next year is on the agenda. We’ll sow hardy annuals, plant bulbs, learn how to plan and prepare a new border and look at plants for autumn colour.
November 13th The days are much shorter now, but there’s still plenty to enjoy in the garden. Winter interest from evergreens, bark and sculptural forms. We’ll look at structure from shrubs and trees – and at keeping the borders looking good all year. It is the beginning of the bare root season and the perfect time for planting.hedges and trees.
The sessions often have a practical element, so outdoor wear is recommended as we may be in the garden for some of the time. Our location is rural; up a long and rather bumpy farm track (apologies).
